![]() In my Senior year of high school I auditioned for a part in our school play. I was selected to play the role of Bo Decker, a young, wild cowboy from Montana in the play Bus Stop by William Inge. In the movie version, the female lead was Marilyn Monroe. The play is the story of Bo, a successful rodeo cowboy, who falls head over heals for a nightclub 'artist' while in St. Louis for a rodeo. Bo was a seriously naive young man, filled with crazy notions of proper behavior. Having been involved in an 'intimate' relationship with Cherie, he forcefully takes her on the bus back to Montana to become his wife. The bus is held up at a country bus stop waiting for bad weather to clear. As the play progresses Bo comes to realize his foolish ways. Here Bo and Cherie confront one another. The funny thing about producing this play in late 60's Virginia was that much of the dialogue was a tad too racy for the conservative community. We had to make a number of changes in the script to avoid controversy. No reference allowed to Bo and Cherie's 'intimate' relationship. Bo's use of the name 'Cherry' instead of Cherie went unexplained (in the original script, Cherie asks him to say her name correctly and when he asks her why she says something like, 'I just don't like it, that's why.' That whole conversation was chopped. All so very tame by today's standards, but I believe there was some question about whether they would even allow us to do that play at all.
