![]() As a Father's Day post, I decided to share this shot of my father in his ham radio 'shack' talking to someone, someplace. While I never took an interest in becoming a ham myself, there was a period when I was fascinated by his ability to talk to people from around the world. I sat with him for hours as he called 'CQ CQ CQ, CQ DX, CQ DX, this is W4KRS calling CQ CQ,' and thrilled when a response came back from Antarctica, or New Zealand, or .... well, it could be anywhere. I think the days listening to him operate his radio helped me to get a better sense for the geography of the world as I would pore over the maps to find that last contact's location. On the wall in front of him are certificates for Worked All States (having proven contact with at least one other ham operator in all 50 states), Work All Continents (the same for Continents), and another I believe was his DX Century certificate acknowledging that he had contacted another ham in at least 100 countries. The background wall was filled with QSL cards sent by those many contacts.
