![]() There is a story behind these two pictures. They were taken the same day, back in July of 1961. I was an eleven-year old thrilled to have been able to spend a half day out deep sea fishing on a chartered fishing boat. We mostly caught Groupers, which while not putting up a terribly valiant fight, can grow quite large. At some point during the morning, I hooked a big one and, according to my mother's note attached to the picture, wore myself out reeling it in. When we returned to the dock and were unloading the catch, the Captain of the ship (Captain Hargas of the Doolie Brook out of Clearwater Beach FL) knew I would want my big catch, so he handed it to me on the deck of the boat for my father to take my picture with it. I was having trouble holding it up, so he said, 'Stick your fingers in its eyes!' and then proceeded to show me how to do it. So in the leftmost picture, there I am with my thumb in one eye socket and my index finger in another, trying to look proud while my brain is totally grossed out. Later, we hooked the fish to a portable scale and Dad took a 'proper' shot, seen to the right. My memory tells me the fish was only 14 pounds, but it sure looks heavier in the pictures doesn't it?
