![]() This picture of Cohoes Falls was taken back in early April shortly after the spring thaws and storms had washed down the Mohawk River Valley. Unknown to most people, Cohoes Falls is the largest waterfall on the east coast after Niagara Falls. Unfortunately, due to operation of a local power plant and redirection of river flow for the Erie Canal, in the summer this waterfall is little more than a trickle of water spilling over a broad face of rock. There is talk of making changes so there is a more steady flow and easier access for the public to see this truly wonderful sight. For a nice little history of the falls, see Story of Cohoes Falls The City of Cohoes itself has an interesting history, that not surprisingly was built upon the power of the river. During the nineteenth century, Cohoes was a world leader in the manufacture of cotton thread and some of the original mill buildings, worker housing, and even the manager's posh home on the Hill overlooking mills, still stand now recognized as a historic district.
