![]() I shot this a little over a year ago, and may have ven posted it before...not sure. But I was thinking this morning how much I have come to really like Troy. I have lived in the NY Capital District for about 23 years and for most of that time my world revolved around Albany or Saratoga Springs and the bedroom community my family lived in. I can probably count on one hand the number of times I drove across the bridge into Troy between 1987 and 2004. But since 2004, Troy has become more and more the focal point of much of my life. I don't live there, but I am across the river, a short few minutes away. I work in Troy. I spend hours at the Photo Center that's there. I like the weekly Farmer's Market (arguably the best of several in the area). I love the monthly Troy Night Out when the streets become filled with folks wandering from art gallery to art gallery and enjoying shopping, music, and food at all the many businesses that are beginning to emerge. I have found much photographic inspiration on the streets and alleys of the city. Troy has a very checkered history. One of the most important industrial cities during the nineteenth century, Troy was a wealthy community and the architectural wonders of that period still bring the core downtown area a charm that is hard to miss. It's not a perfect city. Politics are ... well ... politics. The city has a lousy reputation in some circles and is, I suppose, considered by some to be the black sheep of the Capital Region (for those unfamiliar with that place, it includes Albany, Schenectady, Troy, and Saratoga Springs as well as the many other smaller cities and suburbs connecting those places). Tonight is April's Troy Night Out. I am pleased that I have a couple of pieces in the Photo Regional that has its reception tonight. An artist friend has a new show opening at the Troy Art Center, and the owner of the Photo Center is opening a special show of some of his person art collection. So it will be a busy evening. | |
