Help Portrait
EXIF: SONY DSLR-A700 | 1/80 sec | f 5.6 | 28.0mm (35mm equivalent: 42.0mm) | ISO 200

Yesterday was the international Help Portrait day. For those unfamiliar, groups of photographers around the world participated in an event to 'give photographs instead of taking them.' Here in the NY Capital District we assembled a group of six advanced amateur and professional photographers, supported by a group of about 25 volunteers who did makeup, child craft projects, food service, and much more to provide group and family portraits for some 75 families. The even was extremely well organized as we had not real sense for how the day would go. So we had prepared for the worst. In the end all was pulled off without a hitch.

All of us involved in the organization and planing were surprised by how well things turned out. Throughout the day we made one family after another happy and will send them home with some truly amazing images. In our group, we are giving each family a simple set of enlarged images from one of the shots taken as well as a CD with every shot taken of them for them to take to a print house for additional prints.

I am told there will be national news coverage of Help Portrait on Sunday with CNN and perhaps CBS. Locally, the Time Warner News Channel did a story and both major newspapers (Albany Times Union and Schenectady Gazette) sent photographers over.
