F-18 Tail Hook

Taken at Naval Air Museum in Patuxent River, MD.

I was down there yesterday for a meeting and had some time to visit the Naval Air Museum. It was a combination of work and sightseeing as there were many displays in the museum of direct relevance to past, ongoing, and future work we do for the Navy.

For those unfamiliar with how aircraft carriers work, the tail hook shown here is dropped down when the plane lands. There are a series of 'arresting cables' across the deck and the object is for the tail hook to grab at least one of those cables which then 'arrests' the forward motion of the plane so it doesn't blast right on across the deck and off the other end of the ship.

While at the museum, we spoke with Gus, a retired Naval aviator and past Navy Admiral who now directs the museum in his retirement. Gus was full of interesting stories!
