EXIF: SONY DSLR-A700 | 1/8 sec | f 5.6 | 105.0mm (35mm equivalent: 157.0mm) | ISO 400

So I have had some time to work on the images from yesterday's figure study workshop and contemplate the whys, wherefores, and hows of doing this type of photography. I suppose the most important question I was asked before the workshop by the instructor was, 'Why do want to take this workshop?' I did not enter this session with any clear idea of what I wanted to accomplish other than to try a few underwater ideas. I have not figured out the 'reasons' for why I want to work with models, or even if I really do want to work with them.

But as I have been saying on these pages for what seems like more than a year, I grow tired of the same old types of images I have been posting for more than 4 years now. So the best answer I could offer was that 'I want to shake things up a little.' And that is what I have done. I understand the complexity of any type of model shooting and the specific issues of working with nude models in an artistic mode (as opposed to...well... the OTHER types of nude photography). There are so many details to attend to: exposure, lens choice, lighting, backgrounds, use of props, and (hardest of all for me) directing the model. None of these elements is more important than the others (well, maybe exposure is less important when shooting Raw because in most cases it can be recovered), because any of them can totally ruin and otherwise perfect shot. In a workshop setting it is even more difficult because there is a time pressure that makes it difficult to go slowly and make sure everything is being done systematically and with a clear plan.
