Amazing Monument

There are some truly amazing monuments in the Oakwood Cemetery. A couple of weeks ago, I was exploring a part of the cemetery I had never been in before. Mostly this was an area of relative recent graves, dating from the mid 20th century on; with a few earlier.

It was late afternoon/evening, so the light was interesting and I was looking closely at the stones, when I happened on this truly incredible carving. I am not sure what to make of it. What is up with these intertwined snakes (see detail here)? What is going on with the 'weasel-like' animals at the top that appear to be devouring one another? Who carved this remarkable monument? What is the symbolism?

The stone formed the centerpiece of a small family plot, with most of the marked graves dating from the 1950's or thereabouts.
