While in Virginia a few weeks ago, I dragged my mother on a road trip to find some remains of the old Kanawha Canal system near Glasgow, Va. Unfortunately, I never found the remains, but did get a nice overview of the James River Water Gap -- where the James has cut through the Blue Ridge on its way from the Allegheny Mountains to the west to the Atlantic Ocean. Only a few rivers have succeeded in making this cut over the long years of geological time.

addendum: Thursday Morning. My mother's comment is correct. I didn't 'drag' her anywhere. She was up and at 'em as soon as I mentioned the trip. I was a bit disappointed to have not accomplished my goal on the trip. I later discovered that I need to cross the mountain to find the place I wanted.
