Studio Lighting 101
EXIF: SONY DSLR-A700 | 1/40 sec | f 5.6 | 18.0mm (35mm equivalent: 27.0mm) | ISO 1600

Yesterday I participated in a workshop on Studio Lighting for portraiture. It was a whole new world for me...a photographer who seldom (as in almost never) uses artificial lighting for any of my work and infrequently has a human subject. So it was quite an enthralling experience and more than a little overwhelming as we earned about basic lighting setups, equipment, and working with models. I know I had a lot of problems in that latter area, never being quite sure what I wanted the model to do. I have a bunch of shots done with the studio lights (we were using Alien Bees lights for those who know the equipment), but in all honesty I prefer the ones I did without being connected to the lights better. But that was mostly because I was able to shoot more natural expressions on the models when they were working for another photographer than when they were working with me.

Like every other aspect of photography, to get serious about this sort of work requires a fairly substantial investment even for basic equipment. So you have to ask yourself, 'Just how much am I going to do this sort of thing?' The basic Alien Bees single light package is pretty reasonable at a little over $300, but still...

Fortunately, the Photo Center where I did the workshop has studio space, some basic equipment, and many folks willing to share equipment and knowledge.
