Historic Route 20 begins in Boston, MA and ends in Newport, OR over 3200 miles and twelve states later. Route 20 was one of the first major highways carrying traffic east/west across NYS. This segment, located in northern Otsego County, reflects something of the importance of the highway prior to the opening of the NYS Thruway, which parallels this older route. The thruway was built in the 1950's, and even by then Route 20 had segments that were four lane, divided highways.

Traveling Route 20 is a great alternative to the Thruway if speed is not your primary objective. It takes you through the heart of many small communities and passes close to lots of enjoyable little, but oft forgotten, side trips.
