![]() While out for my drive on Tuesday I found myself very close to Cooperstown, NY and decided to take a cruise through the town. If you are a baseball fan, Cooperstown is well known to you. If you are not a baseball fan, well then best to stay clear of this town. Cooperstown is the home of the Baseball Hall of Fame and during the summer there are many families that make their vacation plans around a trip to Cooperstown and the HOF. One of the most amazing things about the town, however, is that for all its claims to being a major (and I mean MAJOR) tourist draw, Cooperstown is still at its core a very small town. I entered the town along Main Street and passed by the HOF, where a long line waited patiently for their turn to enter the shrine. It took awhile to find a place to park -- eventually taking a 15 minute spot in front of the town Post Office. I got out and walked around for awhile trying to find some way to express the feeling in the air. Lots of Little League teams wandering the streets, going in and out the lines of souvenir shops up and down the street. I took shots of the souvenir stores, of the teams, of the folks waiting in line. But what really struck me were the number of cars along the road that had made their quest to find Baseball history the focus of their trip. Many, like the one pictured above, contained signs proclaiming their journey to the fellow journeyers on the highway. From Tennessee, from Illinois, from Florida, from Pennsylvania... a veritable cross section of the geography of the United States. Yes indeed, baseball is still king in Cooperstown, and always will be. | |
