A few weeks ago, as some of you are aware, parts of New York State were hit with catastrophic floods. The storms fed small streams in central NY that emptied into the Mohawk River, which is still home to one the major canals in the Unied States. This canal has, in one form or another, provided a connection between the eastern portion of the country and the interior since the early 1800s. The storm water rose and the modern canal structures were overtaxed, leading to a closure of the entire system.

This is one of several working barges used by the operators of the canal for maintenence activities. Here is was sitting safely moored inside of Lock 8, just west of Schenectady, NY. All around the lock, there are huge piles of debris - I saw one tree that must have been 4 feet in diameter and about 60 feet long - that has been pulled from the river. Much of this debris threatened the locks and the dams used to create the pools between the locks. I am not sure what the prognosis is for reopening the caanl, but I know that many people, using the canal with their private yachts, were stranded at various locations along the route.
