![]() Last night I was out enjoying some local musicians and hanging out with some folks. I looked down at the table and was really taken by the spot of focused light that passed through my glass of wine. Now this is where the amateur (that would be me) and professional photographer split. I had to have the shot RIGHT then. I could not wait to recreate it in a more controlled setting. But it was very dark and clearly a flash would ruin the effect, so I did what I do best with the 5D and pushed the ISO to the max at 3200 and fired away. It took a lot of processing to get the noise down to even this level (note that there no EXIF data on this shot because my version of Neat Image strips it). And the result is somewhat murky looking...but I captured that spectacular little star of wine-colored light that I was after! Someday perhaps I will set it up in a more formal setting and use a tripod and longer exposure to get what I want. But for today... this will have to do. Bad news earlier today as I learned that I must find a new place to live. No longer will I be able to sit at my desk and watch the sun rise over the Mohawk River. I have a month or so to find a place, but the prospect of having to move never sits well. Sometimes less really is more. I went back to the start and reworked this shot. Rather than processing the RAW image, I used the camera jpg and used considerably less aggressive post processing. In fact there is very little done to this image compared to the one I originally posted. I cropped a little bit and ran the jpg through Neat Image using it's default settings. I much prefer this image, though darker, to the one I posted originally, which you can see on my Flickr site. | |
